Who We Are
With more than 25 years of combined classroom experience, Digging Deeper founders Julia Berg and Sarah Mason are leaders in Social Studies education.
As veteran educators, we cultivate compassionate learning environments that foster curiosity as a path to authentic inquiry. We teach students to navigate controversial topics by examining evidence and seeking consensus, thereby establishing a solid foundation for engaged citizenry.
As amateur archaeologists, Sarah and Julia see the value in preserving and promoting responsible stewardship of our shared cultural resources, and we are passionate about helping educators infuse archaeology into their lessons.

Why Us?
In addition to our classroom responsibilities, we have designed and presented professional development at the school, district, state, and national level and have created curriculum for our local district as well as for private institutions. We have developed curriculum for both elementary and middle school grades, and specialize in training educators to navigate difficult conversations in the classroom related to hard history, such as the Holocaust and race-based slavery. Julia contributed to the development of the new Maryland 6th and 7th Grade Social Studies Standards. Drawing upon their education and communication skills, Sarah and Julia went on to write content for Gibbs Smith’s textbooks aligned with the new standards.
Values & Vision
Sarah and Julia founded Digging Deeper to empower educators with the language, skills, and resources to delve into hard history with compassion and confidence while fostering active global citizenship within their classrooms. We envision a world where historically marginalized stories are told, and where archaeological and cultural resources are protected and preserved.
